Q + A: What is a brand kit?

When clients review my branding process, this is one of the questions I get asked most often! When hiring someone to develop your brand, it’s important to ensure you have a clear understanding of what the deliverables are so that the process between client and designer is smooth. A brand kit is what is sometimes referred to as your ‘brand bible.’ It’s a master file that comprises of your logo in all formats (vector, web, print), typefaces and any accompanying licenses, and often includes social media avatar options (mine always do!). It also includes a style sheet or brand guidelines, which you or your marketing department can refer back to when creating materials to ensure everything stays on brand.

Below is a short case study for Bold Skin Co. This project encompassed a full brand development package, so you can take a look at how we went from the original mood board to the final product, and gain a solid understanding of the brand kit!

MOOD BOARD

The inspiration for this brand is its namesake. The client wanted a brand that would catch your eye mid-scroll, felt like the first minute you walked into a pool party, but still communicated a clean and and natural feel.

LOGO/IDENTITY

Like the name, the client wanted this brand to be anything but quiet. After learning more about the message behind this skincare line, I decided that this brand not only needed a punchy colour palette, but a logo that incorporated a typeface that could stand on it’s own in black and white - and feel just as bold. While initially looking for a sans-serif font, together we landed on the opposite: a serif typeface that felt modern without being too minimal. Since this line of products is both effective and naturally based, we went with a bright kelly green as the main colour with a palette that could be mixed and matched for packaging, social media, etc.

STYLE SHEET

This is the final style sheet that outlines the guidelines for the brand, and gives direction on how logos, colours and imagery should be used. Each and every one of my clients receives this one-pager, and full brand books are available for larger brand development packages.
